This August was a special one; together with my friend Suus, I traveled to Morning Flory Flowers at Martha's Vineyard, USA to teach animal vase workshops. Doing my usual pottery thing, except other side of the world, on an island, in the middle of a flower field, with a clay I never used before. It was all as adventurous as it sounds and very much worth the effort. A trip to remember ❤️

It started with an invite from Robyn from Morning Glory Flowers; a flower Farm in the heart of the island that offers fun creative workshops in their beautiful flower fields. Using a bright stoneware clay, we taught three workshops in which the cutest animal vases were created. The students sculpted and painted their designs, I fired and glazed them afterward and then they were ready for pickup. Due to rain, we did the first workshop in the big barn (which was very fun and cozy:). The other two days, we moved everything outside in the flowerfield. Making pottery from there was so peaceful and inspiring; like we were far away from everyting with nothing but our clay and each others company. We had great chats and it was so fun to see all the different creations come together ❤️

Trips like these make you realize just how much organization and materials are involved with pottery; how would I get all my things there? And where would we fire everything? Fortunately the farm is setting up their own creative studio and a brand new kiln was waiting for us when we arrived. The biggest challenge was the clay itself, as the one I work with at home isn't distributed / available to the US at all. With help of a local pottery store, I ended up choosing a clay from distance before I came over. I arrived early to familiarize myself with the clay, created clay slip colors to paint the pieces with and, fortunately, that all worked out pretty well 😊

Sharing my love for ceramics at Martha's Vineyard was privelege. The pottery classes as well as the island itself made it a trip to remember. If you ever plan to visit, make sure to go by Morning Glory Flowers to see their beaitiful fields and visit their cute shop.
